WALLACE — For 23 years, theater-goers in Wallace have had the opportunity to boo the villain and cheer for the hero and heroine at the town’s Sixth Street Melodrama.

And this summer is no exception.

On July 5, “The Miner’s Daughter, or Evil Reaps its Just Reward” will open with a special champagne gala at 6:30 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. The theater is located at 212 Sixth St., in the oldest building currently standing in the historic town of Wallace.

Those attending the theater’s July production will see many Sixth Street veterans, and a new face as well, said the show’s director Colleen Pettis, who is co-directing this melodrama with Vern Hanson.

“The Miner’s Daughter, or Evil Reaps its Just Reward” is about a miner named Barney, portrayed by Fred Bentley, whose daughter Clementine, portrayed by Whitney Hawk, comes home from finishing school and teams up with Sheriff Harold Strongheart, portrayed by Court Alfrey, to solve a murder. Lauren Wood and Anna Hoppe are playing Billie Tiddle and Tillie Biddle, two women out to march against the evils of bad liquor.

New to the melodrama stage this summer is Kyle Pettis, who is the evil villain Jackpot Slade, who wants to steal the mine from poor, unsuspecting Barney.

After each melodrama performance will be the Kelly’s Alley Review directed and produced by Joy Persoon. This summer, attendees are in for some pleasant surprises and changes during the review.

Performances are each Wednesday through Saturday evenings throughout the month of July, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and $12, and can be reserved by calling the theater at 752-8871, or 1-877-SIXTHST. Tickets must be picked up one hour before curtain time.

The upcoming August show will begin on Aug. 2, and run through Aug. 27. “Mischief in the Magnolias, or Weed Em’ and Reap” is directed by Cindy Bentley.
