Melodrama receives hefty donation
writes, "Last weekend for summer theater

Wallace - Members of the Sixth Street Melodrama recently received a $5,000 donation toward the theater.

Sixth Street Melodrama board member Joy Persoon declined to name the donor, but did say the individual was from Portland, Ore. and had attended a melodrama performance.

"He came up after the show and laid an envelope on the piano," Persoon said. "It tells us that people like us and believe in us."

The funds will likely be used to improve the theater and the board may purchase a new furnace to install upstairs of the historic building, she said. Last year, pipes froze and it would be nice to make the actors comfortable when they are changing into costumes, Persoon said.

They may also purchase new lights for the theater, as the melodrama has been borrowing lights from Kevin Sevy, Persoon said. It will also help in the "general upkeep" of the theater. However, every month fluctuates in expenses and heating bills, she said.

In years past, the board of directors put a new furnace in the downstairs area of the building and they installed a central air conditioner, Persoon said. They also purchased a new piano.

"It will be nice not having to worry at the end of the month," Persoon said. "It's nice to have a backup and it makes the theater better."

The theater has seen many visitors from all over the country, Persoon said. There have been visitors from New York, used to Broadway theater, who say the community theater in Wallace is refreshing, Persoon said.

"That gives us recognition and to know that we're doing a good job," Persoon said.

A day after the theater received the $5,000 donation, "a little old lady came up and handed me $4," Persoon said. "It was very touching and it was just as important."

The last show of the summer theater season will be on Sunday, Persoon said. "Mischief in the Magnolias Or... Weed 'Em and Reap," directed by Cindy Bentley, will be showing at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday. The Sunday show will start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $12. The next Sixth Street Melodrama will be "Nunsense Amen!" running Nov. 3 - Nov. 19.
